2nd International Conference: ‘Central European Masculinities in a Comparative Perspective’

Florence Tamagne & Ivan Jablonka

Report by Agnieszka Żur

The conference (in Katowice on 14-15 November 2024) opened with keynote lecture ‘’What to Do with Men?’’ given by Ivan Jablonka (Sorbonne Paris Nord University), criticizing the rise of populism and its intersection with traditional masculinities, focusing on recent election of Donald Trump, while questioning why working-class white men in both EU and the USA are drawn to such conservative politics. The emphasis was put on the need for introspection among men and acknowledgment of their role in perpetuating patriarchal systems. Jablonka advocated for “masculine feminism’’ that is just and committed to a collective action, urging men to redefine their masculinity and contribute to social change alongside women in pursuit of gender equality. The international symposium Central-European Masculinities in a Comparative Perspective, held on June 19–20, 2024, at CEFRES in Prague, was a pivotal event in the field of Critical Studies on Men and Masculinities. Organised under the Central-European Masculinities research project, this symposium brought together leading academic institutions across Central Europe: the Institute of Literary Studies at the University of Silesia in Katowice, the Department of Czech and Comparative Literature at Charles University, the Institute of Czech Literature at the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Polish Culture at the University of Warsaw, the Institute of Slovak Literature at the Slovak Academy of Sciences, the Center for Social Sciences – Sociology Institute, and the French Research Center in Humanities and Social Sciences (CEFRES, CNRS-MEAE). The event was supported by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research through the PARCECO program. The symposium explored the construction and deconstruction of masculinities within historical and contemporary contexts in Central Europe. Interdisciplinary discussions emphasized the dynamic and contextual nature of masculinity, integrating local perspectives into the global academic discourse. Sessions covered a wide range of themes, from literary modernity to queer masculinities under state socialism, fostering a comprehensive dialogue among scholars.

Dynamics of Political Participation: Disciplinary Knowledge through the Prism of “Area Studies”

Un compte rendu par Eymeric Quettier, stagiaire au CEFRES

This yearly workshop is organized within the cooperation agreement signed by EHESS, CEFRES, Charles University and the Czech Academy of Sciences. The 2023 session aimed to bring together Ph.D. students around the theme of political participation, which was to be understood broadly. It invited the participants to reflect on how their knowledge is situated within “area studies” (including Central Europe, the Middle East, or Latin America) and on the concepts and disciplines they mobilize. The debates drew on the strong philological tradition of the Central European area studies, while also questioning it to analyze the relationship between disciplinary knowledge and situated knowledge. The participants reflected on the dynamics of political participation through two non-exclusionary lenses proposed by the organizers of the conference.
